It remains to see if the new policy of engagement with the Taliban will bear fruit - Reuters/File photo.

One of the above will attack a police station in Lahore, killing 20 cops and 10 ordinary citizens.

Another will attack the house of a local leader of ANP killing five women, three children, two security guards and a political leader.

Another will attack a Shiite mosque / Imambargah killing 30 worshipers.

Another will blow himself up in a five star hotel in Islamabad destroying the building, killing 30 persons, ten of them foreign nationals.

Another will attack the procession of Eid-Milad-un-Nabi to eliminate 'shirk' from Islam.

Another will blow a bridge on a river in the NWFP.

Another will attack a funeral procession in D.I. Khan.

Another will kill a moderate Deobandi cleric in Peshawar or Quetta.

and the list goes on.

RAWALPINDI: Security was tightened across the country on Monday after intelligence agencies warned that Taliban leader Baitullah Mehsud has dispatched 20 foreign militants, mostly Uzbeks, to carry out terror strikes in major cities.

A senior police official said agencies had warned police that the terrorists had left for Bannu on their way to Islamabad, Lahore, Rawalpindi and other major cities.

He said that adequate protective measures had been taken, security around police installations had been tightened and patrolling had been increased.

He said vehicles, visitors from other cities and vagrants were being randomly checked in Rawalpindi and Islamabad.

Police teams, led by SSP Operations Yasin Farooq, were checking hotels and vehicles. He said 36 ‘suspicious’ people had been rounded up and at least 79 motorbikes, 19 cars and two rickshaws had been impounded.

Police, he said, had also arrested 20 people on charges of various crimes and seized illegal weapons. Three proclaimed offenders had also been arrested, he said. (Dawn)

I continue to believe that Swat was handed to the mullah too easily, too quickly; and like many others in the country and abroad I am of the firm opinion that those parts of our security establishment which are hand-in-glove with the extremists made this handover possible. There are too many stories, too many witnessed instances where the security forces simply did nothing when the terrorists went about killing people at will under the very noses of the troops stationed a few metres away from the grisly happenings.

Well, friends, prepare yourselves for the coming assault upon whatever there is of constitutional rule in the country in the not too distant future. Quetta is said to be almost within the grasp of the terrorists, who many say are about to declare Sharia there too. I believe that large areas of the city are already out of bounds for women and only wonder when exactly the first of the girls’ schools will be blown up there.

After Quetta, southern Punjab from whence, according to every evidence, come the fiercest and the most cold-blooded of the Taliban of Swat; after that Lahore itself. I dread the morning that Lahore will wake up to decapitated bodies hanging upside down at Mozang Chungi. Or outside Data Durbar. Or at Liberty Chowk where a dress rehearsal has already been carried out in the shameful attack on the Sri Lankan cricket team.
