DG KHAN: Death toll has climbed to 24 while over 30 others were wounded in a bomb explosion that ripped through a mourners procession in Muslim Town here, IG Punjab confirmed Thursday.

Talking to Geo News, IG Punjab Shaukat Javed said the explosion left no crater on the ground indicating the blast could be a suicide attack.

The blast ripped through a mourners’ procession in Muslim Town outside Johar Ali Imam Bargah.

Rescue teams arrived at the scene immediate after the explosion and shifted the dead and injured to the district headquarter hospital where many are said to be in critical condition.

The explosion, which shattered the windowpanes of the nearby buildings, enraged the participants of the procession and they chanting slogans against the government. (The News).

Deadly blast at Pakistan mosque(Al Jazeera Report)

Thousands have been killed in sectarian violence in Pakistan since the 1980s [EPA]

Up to 20 people have been killed and dozens injured in a bomb blast near a Shia mosque in Pakistan's central Punjab province.

The explosion occurred on Thursday as worshippers gathered for an evening prayer ceremony in the city of Dera Ghazi Khan.

Al Jazeera's Kamal Hyder, reporting from Islamabad, said a bomb exploded and hit a procession heading towards the mosque.

"At least 15 people have been confirmed dead," he said.

The blast also injured dozens of others, many of whom were taken to hospitals in other cities since adequate facilities are not available in Dera Ghazi Khan.

Shaukat Javed, a police commander, said: "It seems to be a suicide attack because there is no crater on the ground. Usually if a bomb is planted it would create a crater."

The powerful blast caused serious damage to the mosque and another nearby Shia holy site.

Shia muslims are observing the last week of a 40-day mourning period to commemorate the death of Hussein, the grandson of Prophet Mohammad. Hussein was killed in 680 AD.

About 20 per cent of Pakistan's 160-million-population are Shia Muslims.

Although Shia and Sunnis generally co-exist peacefully in the country, more than 4,000 people have died in sectarian violence since the late 1980s.

Two days ago, an explosion ripped through a Sunni mosque in the northwest town of Dera Ismail Khan, killing one person and wounding 18 others.

At least 25 Shia Muslims have been killed and 50 others injured after a bomb exploded near a mosque in Pakistan, police and medics say.

The blast took place on Thursday evening in town of Dera Ghazi Khan in the central Punjab province, a Press TV correspondent reported.

The mourners were holding rituals to mark the 40th day of Imam Hussein's (PBUH) martyrdom.

Witnesses said they saw bodies and scores of others injured lying on the ground shortly after the blast.

"It was a planted bomb which was fixed on the route where the mourners were passing through," a senor police official said.

"At least 25 five people have killed so far in the religious procession blast," said Dr. Pervez Haider, the head of the local hospital.

The death toll may rise further as some of the 50 people inured are in critical condition.

Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari and the Premier Yousaf Reza Gilani have condemned the blast.

Shias make up more than a quarter of Pakistan's 160 million-strong population. Since the 1980s, thousands people have been killed in sectarian violence in Pakistan by feuding extremist groups.

I think Iran should stop interfering into the affairs of the Islamic Nations such Iraq, Lebanon, Bahrain and pakistan.

Iran has an expansionist desire and wants to do so through radicalizing the Shia populations in these countries.

And Iranian agents must stop calling the Sunnis as wahabis or Nasbis.

The entire Shiite belief is based on the false story of Karbala.

Dear Chiblee,

There is one problem that Chief of Munawwar Hasan i.e. Mawlana Mawdudi and Khomeini were friends and Mawdudi had written an Excellent Book on Karbala i.e. Khilafat o Malookiyat. All the books by Mawdudi are in syllabus of Iran's Qum University. By the way what happened to the jubilation over Lebanon's defence by Hizbullah, Mullahs in Pakistan celebrated that!!!! Jinnah was also Shia. You should getout of Pakistan becuase it was made by A RAFIZI.

@chiblee

I totally agree with you only America and Saudi Arabia have right to interfere into the affairs of Muslim countries such as Iraq, Lebanon, Behrain, and Pakistan !!!!

And I also agree Iran shouldn't support Shias of Pakistan, Iraq or Bahrain --- whereas Saudi Arabia should be allowed to fund Salafis and Wahabies in these countries so that they can be build large seminaries and hate literature can be published. And Saudi Agents like Sipah-e-Sahaba and Lashkar-e-Jhangvi should be allowed to kill Shias in mosques and besiege their towns in Parachinaar !!

And I also agree with you that Wahabies should not be called Nasbiis ! While Wahabies and Nasbiis should be allowed to call Shias Kafirs and even deny the tragedy of Karbala !!!!

The Shia dont call the main stream Sunnis Wahabis or Nasibis. Wahabi filth was created in late 1800 in Najd while Nasibis are those who hate the Ahle Bait. Sunnis dont hate Ahle Bait neither they are wahabis since wahabis didnt exist even three hundred years ago while Sunni/Shia split started due to differences on Khilafat. Its the Wahabis that hide behind Sunnah and commit murders of women and children exactly the same way Yazeed-e-Laeen did after he attacked Medina and slaughtered women and children. Are you going to deny that as well wahabi nasibi?

You can deny Karbala, you can claim to be Sunni, you can forge any story you want but the rest of us are not stupid and ignorent and very well know who the nasibis are and know wahabis are.

Killing non-combatant women and children doesnt give legitimity to fals sects but i guess makes the impotent followers of a false sect feel powerful and in their wicked minds, legitimize their false Aqaaed.

In Iraq you didnt fight US Army, you just killed women and children indiscriminately and caused civil war in this great nation and now your virus/desease is spreading to other lands.
