Zardari directs not to issue statements against MQM. Altaf appreciates President’s statement.

Agents of the anti-democracy establishment, i.e., Shaheen Sehbai and Shahid Masood, must be really unhappy on this development. Long live democracy. Down with yellow journalism!

Zardari directs not to issue statements against MQM

ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari has directed his party leaders not to issue statements against Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) amid the rising tension between MQM and Pakistan Peoples’ Party (PPP).

According to sources, President Zardari telephoned Chief Minister (CM) Sindh Qaim Ali Shah and Provincial Interior Minister Zulfiqar Mirza directing them not to issue statements against MQM.

Altaf appreciates President’s statement

LONDON: Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) Quaid Altaf Hussain has highly appreciated the statement of the President, Asif Ali Zardari directing the leaders of the People’s Party not to issue statement against MQM.

In a statement issued here, Altaf Hussain said President’s statement augured well. He also advised MQM leaders that they should also be highly cautious in this context, while issuing statements and act wisely for a turnaround from the present acerbic environment.

MQM information office in a statement said that Quaid-e-Tahrik Altaf Hussain has expressed his displeasure over the latest poem of a member of Rabita Committee, Mustafa Azizabadi, which was based on his personal views and his own act. Rabita Committee has directed Syed Mustafa Azizabadi that he should refrain from publishing any of his poems based on political themes without consulting the Rabita Committee.

"We are in government because we have got people's mandate" - President Zardari

KARACHI: Following weeks of sharp criticism, President Asif Ali Zardari assured PPP supporters that his government would complete its five year term in a televised address, DawnNews reported.

In an address to PPP supporters in Karachi via video link from the Presidency, the President lashed out at critics for painting a grim picture of his government.

Addressing a rally of thousands of party loyalists at Shahra-e-Faisal in Karachi, Zardari marked the PPP’s 43rd anniversary by hitting out at what he called ‘certain forces’ and ‘sections of the media’ for increasing criticism over the government and casting doubt over its future.

‘Parties criticizing the government should wait for next elections to prove their point, as that would strengthen democracy,’ said the President, adding that ‘the PPP will not be blackmailed by few political actors.’

Highlighting the PPPs successes and national appeal, Zardari highlighted that his party was ‘the first to apologise to the people of Balochistan,’ and that winning elections in ‘Gilgit-Baltistan was a tremendous achievement.’

The President went on to say that he had returned to Pakistan to ‘fight for democracy’ despite knowing that he would ‘be sent to jail.’

He went on to add that his party was fulfilling their promises to the people, and that ‘it is the PPP’s right to rule for five years.’— DawnNews

PPP to remain strong, complete its term: President Zardari

KARACHI, Nov 25 (APP): President Asif Ali Zardari Wednesday said the PPP remains strong and committed to defend democracy, will complete its term and foil the “attempts of political actors” to de-rail the system.“We will foil all conspiracies against the party. We are not afraid of conspiracies and if there are any, we will fight,” the President said in an address to the party workers and leaders gathered here at Peoples Chowrangi on PPP’s Founding Day.

“It is the right of PPP government to complete its tenure. I can say proudly that the parliament and the opposition do not want the system to get derailed.”

“Neither the political parties, nor the establishment want it either, but it is only a handful of political actors. They should wait for their turn till the next election,” he added.

President described those critical of the party as “political actors” and said the party was not afraid of any “dates” being given by some.

“We are here because we have got a mandate.”

The event held next to the Mausoleum of Quaid-e-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah was addressed live by the President from the Aiwan-e-Sadr in Islamabad, and attended by thousands of party workers who waved the tri-colour party flags and raised slogans of ‘jeay Bhutto’ and “aik Zardari sab pey bhari’ - one Zardari is superior to all others, throughout the event.

The event was also addressed by various tiers of party leaders including Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah and Minister Labour Syed Khurshid Shah.

The President said once again a campaign to tarnish image of the party was being carried out.

“The people of Pakistan elected us through democratic vote and gave it a mandate and it is the democratic right of the party to complete its term.”

The President expressed complete confidence in the party and its workers and said “courageous and devoted workers of PPP are the strength of the party.”

“You have never, and will never give up the struggle against anti people forces,” the President said and added “the dream of democracy has survived only because you have shed your blood and rendered numerous sacrifices.”

He said Sindh has played a key role in the creation of Pakistan and will render every sacrifice for the country. “We have to save Pakistan,” he added.

The President said some other political parties were not seeing what he was foreseeing and said “we want that the party of Mian Nawaz Sharif succeeds while other smaller parties also succeed.”

He said the PPP won a huge mandate in Gilgit Baltistan which was a proof of its popularity.

The President said the PPP draws its strength from Shaheeds Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto and Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto. It was the party that decided who will hold which post.

It was the PPP that called upon Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani, in the name of Shaheed Benazir Bhutto to become the future Prime Minister of Pakistan, he said and recalled the same was done for him.

“Bhuttoism is now in the President House and that is what causes fear amongst some,” he said.

“It was the same President House that echoed that late Benazir Bhutto was a security risk. Today it echoes with slogans of ‘Jeay Bhutto’ and the credit goes to the sacrifices of its leaders and workers.

“Now I can say with confidence that Bhuttoism lives and will continue to live in the hearts and minds of the people,” the President Zardari said as the venue reverberated with resounding slogans of ‘Jeay Bhutto’.

He said it was the PPP that gave rights to people of Balochistan, FATA and Gilgit Baltistan.

He said the world today knows that Pakistan was serious and was waging a struggle to eliminate extremists and terrorists from its soil. He also mentioned the return of 2.5 million IDPs to their homes in an unprecedented short period of time.

The President also paid rich tributes to the hundreds of martyrs of democracy, to valiant soldiers, policemen and members of the law enforcing agencies who laid down their lives in fight against terrorism and militancy.

He described terrorism and militancy as a cancer that “took away Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto from us.” He said the PPP government got “political ownership” to this war through the parliament, and the nation, along with their armed forces stand united to fight it till the end.

The world today has acknowledged the role of Pakistan in the war against terror.

“Now they do not tell us to do more. Rather we ask them to do more [for us].”

The President said Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto formed this Party 42 years ago and gave a voice to the people.

He recounted the several achievements of the party and said “we have served our country and not done a favour to our people.”

The President recalled the statement of Bilawal Bhutto who termed “democracy as best revenge” and said the next generation of the party has risen from its sacrifices.

The President described the founding of the party as “a day of people empowerment and a reminder that all power belongs to the people.”

Sindhis responsible for 97% of corruption in Pakistan: NRO's message

By Abdul Nishapuri

Once again, it would appear that the rules are different for peoples from Sindh whereas politicians, bureaucrats and military personnel from Punjab and elsewhere are angels who do not have a spot of corruption on their careers. Or at least, that is what the establishment wants us to believe through its "NRO" tool.

NRO list out, 34 politicians among 8,000 beneficiaries
By Amir Wasim

Sunday, 22 Nov, 2009 (Dawn)

ISLAMABAD: A majority of the NRO beneficiaries have been bureaucrats and government officials as a list, released by the government on Saturday, contained names of only 34 politicians out of a total of 8,000.

According to the list, almost 97 per cent of the beneficiaries are from Sindh. The ordinance will lapse on Nov 28 in the light of the Supreme Court’s July 31 verdict in the PCO judges case.

The list shows that a total of 8,041 people — 7,793 from Sindh — have benefited from the National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO), promulgated by former president Pervez Musharraf on Oct 5, 2007.

These people have got withdrawn 3,478 cases (3,320 in Sindh) registered against them on charges of corruption, financial bungling, misuse of authority and criminal charges.

What do ordinary Pakistanis think about NRO?
(various sources including pkpolitics, friendskorner etc)

Pakistan said:
7,793 from Sindh, this does not mean that sindhis are corrupt.
Ghulam Agmad Bloor from ANP said on a TV show that 99% corruptionwas done in Punjab through loans written off ,by a specific part in punjab, and they built from sugar to terxtile industry.
These corrupt military, civil bureaucrats and government officials should be brought to justice.

This was time when every MNA and MPA in punjab was running to get loan and get write off and then develop a factry.

Worh to see that time a loan beneficiary and calculate the amount with interest toay.

How accurate are the cases against those on the list? NAB after all was run through Musharraf’s orders and the history of judiciary is well known.

The above list is half of the looters. The list – which consists the gangsters from Sind- was prepared by the looters from Punjab when they (Nawaz and his team) were in government. Now the looters from Sind (Zardari and party) are in government and they are in process of preparing another list of gangsters who belong to Punjab. All these consist of one group- the looters of the nation. Now Nawaz Sharif is protecting them- Then Zardari will be protecting Nawaz. You can say two teams of looters – the lahori group and the larkana group- looting the country for the last 65 years.

This list is only for the “idiot” politicians who instead of buying judiciary and other related officials , preffered to get rid of the cases through NRO. There are many shrewd and clever politicians who foresaw long time ago that such ordinances had no long term validity and effect. They “managed” to get clear themselves through the judicary and NAB. Now, question is that no body investigating the “CRIME” even if some got acquittal from the courts, it looks some angels came down to earth and looted the money ands thats all.

Many of us MAY BE familiar with a fact that especially when an officer from the army reaches the rank of a ‘Brigadier’ he (& now a ’she’ also) is LITERALLY ‘OFFERED’ ON A SILVER PLATTER, a prized piece of land in any military cantonment & MAY BE, then or (sometimes earlier or later,) when he reaches the rank of a Major:/Lt:General, he is THEN AGAIN ‘OFFERED’ the best ‘PIECES’ of STUD FARMS/AGRICULTURAL LANDS; that he MAY HAVE NEVER DREAMED-OFF?

A major question is then normally asked by majority of lower rank officers, sitting within or outside GHQ that ‘WHY THEM & NOT US?

What is called a ‘rat-race’ is THUS INITIATED by senior military officers with the backing & greediness of their spouses.

Consequently, there is a lot of ‘heart-burning’ amongst the lower ranks, whether themselves officers, or other ranks (comprising of Jco’s, Nco’s & men.) Is there any JUSTIFICATION for such a dole-out or ‘charity, whatever you may call it?

In order to ‘lessen’ the so-called ‘heart-burning’ among junior officers of the rank of Lt:Colonels & Majors, it was THUS decided about 15/20 years back, to ‘DULY REWARD’ them too, by the ‘CHARITABLE ENDOWMENT’ organization called the GHQ.

This legacy of ‘buying-off’ the LOYALTIES of the officers-lot was left behind by our ‘clever & intelligent’ Britishers, who ‘devastated’ every facet of life, during their, over 200 years rule,) NOT AT THEIR OWN EXPENSE, BUT AT OURS!

Will ever any army officer voluntarily, (whether TODAY or TOMORROW,) return back to GHQ, the PRIZED land ( worth billions in Pak Rs) , house or a residential flat, ( worth millions?)
Your own answer, NOT SURPRISINGLY would be a big, NO !

The NRO list of Beneficiaries is not as big of an issue as the fight against terrorism. The media can help us unite to raise voice against terrorism. We are Pakistanis and we can do this.

Whatever OTHER BENEFITS that a serving or a retired military officer obtains during his service with the civil govt, ( especially during past martial years of Ayub, Zia or any other, such era; they are usually ‘OVER & ABOVE’ what he gets from GHQ, either during his ‘pre’ or ‘post’ retirement period of service in the military.

I seriously think that the Ministry of Defense should also release a similar LIST, showing the names of beneficiaries of the three services, i.e; Pak Army Navy & Air Force, ‘who had their cake & ate it’ too & also ‘burned both ends of their candles’!

MAY BE, there will be so much of pressure by retired military officers upon the incumbent Service Chiefs, that such a list will NEVER see the light of the day.

MAYBE, (I AGAIN repeat MAYBE,) it could result in a ’swift, short & quick’ move by the military, to SAVE IT” s HOLY COWS , TOO, FROM PUBLIC EXPOSURE?

Adonis said:
Given the backdrop of all the propaganda and the virile hatred that many ignorant and gullible Pakistanis keep expressing about politicians, this list of NRO beneficiaries is an eye opener.

It is time for us to realize that our politicians are not the source of our problems, rather it is the corrupt civil and military bureaucracy.

Politicians are accountable to the people and in every elections they have to defend their deeds. If the political system is not derailed by power-hungry generals, the relatively few corrupt politicians can easily be purged by the democratic process.

• Is it not the type of NRO in past and future
* In proposed Balochistan package people will be release from jail and all the cases against them will be withdraw and many of them openly admitted that they are doing arm struggle.
*In coming years Taliban will be part of Afghan govt and thousands of Pakistani Taliban will be in political process without any sentences.
*In 1977 military operation in balochistan stopped after five years. All prisoners released. No general or political activist who was openly involved in arm struggle blame for any thing.
*Nawaz family with a deal with Mushraf went to Saudi Arab.
*In history of trade union thousand times after strikes when management and trade union sit on table for agreement first it decided all charge sheets will be withdrawn.
*Pholan davi, a proved dacoit in India got mercy and became Lock Saba member.
*Every dictator in Pakistan got approval for breaking constitution, from assessable.
*when Ayub khan went thousands political activist was in jail with true and false FIR but next day they start releasing them. Same thing happened when Bhutto gone.

All above example are proved crimes not only political but murders, treason etc. this NRO is nothing to do with proved cases even in some cases more then 11 years within two different governments.

If supreme court can say that last supreme court made mistake and their action null and void then if National assembly decide that the approval of ( Mushraf 12th October coup and first PCO ) was wrong and it is null and void then what going to be happened with Ch Iftikhar.
You can find hundreds example in our and in world history where for breaking stalemate with political understanding we have to do this. Opposition for NRO is not about eliminating corruption. This is a political agenda. Generals have no problems with politician’s corruption instead they encourage them so they can blackmail them. Why they hate Zardari? He is trying to make good relation with India and interested in supremacy of civil govt on Military. Fortunate of Pakistani people Nawaz sharif (not all Muslim league) also have same vision. Most of these people are not democrat in nature. They can not remove him democratically so remove him by NRO, by court or by military.

Actually Military Economic Umpire and co sponsors dont want to give free space to democratic system because they fear it,If it succeeds, which will weaken their power control over state. Its war started by Military Alliance (Certain Media+Mullas+agencies+Certain class in bureacracy etc) against PPP led Govt to discredit Govt so that they can cut the roots of democracy.Wake up call for Pro-democratic forces!!

Army generals the most corrupt people along with Punjabi establishment and Muslim League are the real culprits.

Nawaz Sharief family are bunch of saints who become the most richest just with hard work and by praying five times. The state pakistan has no courege to make cases against punjabi leaders. This will take Pakistan to its logical end , disintegration.

I am neither against healthy criticism nor I ever consider PPP as Party of angels.Having said that I am also against Biased and abusive approach against PPP and its leadership.Even as per Transparency International and many independent fact finding reports, the Biggest plunders of national assets are Military Establishment Umpire. They are looting it without any accountability and any check & balance and any time they can over throw democratic system on the basis of so called ‘Biggest national interest’..while they are also considered Pure ppl of Pakistan.

Its important to understand the bigger picture,The weakness of any party or democratic system gives stimulus or rejuvenate the role of Military Authority.Since the day one,The Military Alliance has captured the authority over state and they WONT ever allow any Federal party or leadership to earn good names or strengthen the democratic system. It is indeed War of interests between Democratic Camp Vs Military Alliance (Military+Intelligence agencies+Certain Media+Pseduo Political groups+Mullas etc).

Politicians have suffered more and earned bad name, while the Military Alliance have earned not only good name but also plundered at the extreme.Give a break please, whether good or bad,Politicians have to go through democratic process, which may be slow but sooner or later,it will reform, but the wekaness of Political parties should not be an EXECUSE for any Military QUO.Therefore,I suggest you all to be free to criticize any party or leadership but dont be blind in hate/biased mind..dont be a tool of Propaganda Industry of Agencies and Media co which have only objective to discredit Democratic system.

The TIME for serious thinking has now arrived. We must admit that due to our religious thinking and attachments, certain communities and regions have blindly voted for Bhuttto Party, and believe me we all are suffering very badly now. In view of Transparency International Report we have been down-graded by 5 points and this is only due to NRO and widespread corrruption.

The corruption is to such a high level that even if you need a new gas or electricity connection you have to bribe from an ordinary office clerk, then SDO and then XEN.

Yes, this corruption has been in ALL previous Govt’s, but my God why is it ‘free for all’ situation when Bhutto Party rules. Peoples Party must change its name to Bhutto Family Corruption Party.

What really annoys me is that for the last few weeks, Zardari has now started to wear Sindhi topi. I personally saw that news item when 2 days ago at Kabul Airport he was wearing Sindhi topi. Zardari must come to his senses, he is now trying to fight Sindhi against Punjabi, and Shia against Sunni. We must now allow this to happen. I urge to all Zardari lovers that they must come to their senses. This latest list of beneficiaries has been prepared by Zardari’s own hand picked PM and this list contains 90% Sindhhi’s.

In the last 2 Govt of Benazir, Sindhi’s were particulary given jobs in PIA, Customs, Airport Immigration, huge loans in the name of Agricultural Loans, free umrah tickets etc. I am not saying that the then Punjab Govt of Pervaiz Elahi was an angel, but the level of corruption with the aid of MQM was at a very high level in Sindh.

U Said “This latest list of beneficiaries has been prepared by Zardari’s own hand picked PM and this list contains 90% Sindhhi’s.”

I refute ur claims that 90 percent are Sindhis instead the right Phrase should be 90 percent are from SINDH.Dont play with fire of ethncity.

List contains names of only 34 politicians out of a total of 8,000.Only four Sindhi Political figures got benefit from NRO (AZ,Nusrat Bhutto,Agha Siraj Durani,Yusuf Talpur),14 Politicians are from Punjab. The Biggest beneficiary of NRO is MQM not Sindhis…Mind the GAP Please.

Your second claim about Sindhi topi, which creates trouble for you, seeing a President wearing Sindhi cap as if its some cap from India or Jews.Give a break man,President AZ wears this cap on many official events even on the day he took oath as President. Why A sindhi cap gives u suffocation, why you see always boiling Ethenic divide.SIndhis are equal stake holders of this state, who were the first ppl in Indo Sub continent to pass the Pakistan resolution bill in Assembly before prepartition, they always voted for Federal Parties, either PPP or PMLN etx, then why again some ppl want to corner them.Dont Push harder or play with fire,I am sure,if PPP ever lost its strength in Sindh, then if u know the dynamics of Sindh,No other party has any base nor they try to make their foundation…how many times NS or Imran khan visited Sindh…??Except PPP,other strong thriving forces are Nationalists.I personally feel that Sindh can turn another Baluchistan the day PPP loose its credibility in Sindh, coz other credible force left is Nationalists.

Hinduism: An eco-friendly way of life

A thought provoking article by Riaz Sohail on BBC Urdu dot com, comparing the treatment of peacocks in Sindh by Muslims versus Hindus.

Shame on those Muslims who claim that their religion is a message of peace for all living creatures but whose actual practices are in direct opposition to their religious principles.

Hinduism: An eco-friendly way of life
In Hiduism, plants and animals have a distinctive place. All the Gods and Goddesses are associated with a particular tree or animal. Thus, Hindu culture teaches us to respect other living beings and live together sharing mother earth.
Fri, Sep 11, 2009

IN THIS era of global warming, much effort is given to promote environment-friendly living and lifestyle. In this regard, Hinduism is very much forward and since time immemorial, Hindu rishis (sages) were much aware of thePanchabhuta (five elements) and the need and also the process to live in harmony with everything animate and inanimate in this world. For example, in Hinduism even Gods are imagined in natural atmosphere and worshipped associating them with animals and trees.

Lord Vishnu (the saver of the whole universe) is imagined as sleeping peacefully on the bed formed with Sheshanag (great snake) on great ocean. Lord Shiva is meditating on glaciers, accompanied by bull named as Nandi and River Ganga is flowing out of the hair of his head and snakes are playing peacefully on his holy body. The ocean and the glaciers are most important chain for existence of this globe and are thus kept as most sacred place and protected from any human intervention.

In Hinduism, all Gods are worshipped with one animal as vahan (carrier/company). Apart from spiritual meanings, this is helpful to protect animal bio-diversity; all the animals which have an important role in environment are preserved carefully by allotting a special status as attached with Gods-- for example, beautiful white swan is associated with Lord Brahma (the creator) and Goddess Saraswati (Goddess of education and fine arts). God Maheswara is sitting on Brisava (great Ox ), Lord Krishna is associated with cows. Dhavali and Saoli are the names of His two favourite cows. Goddess Laxmi is accompanied by owl or elephants, Devi Durga is sitting on a lion, Devi Ganga is sitting on Makara (an ancient sea-animal looks like an elephant), Lord Ganesha is worshipped with a mouse and Lord Kartikeya is seen on a peacock.

Among dus avatars (ten incarnations) of Lord Vishnu, fish, tortoise and wild boar are described as the three most primitive avatars. In this way, Hindus tried to point out the chain of evolution of life on earth, and this also gives a special protection to tortoise, fishes and wild boars.

Most of the temples in India, especially in rural areas are home to different animals like monkey, tortoises, fish, snakes, bats, owls etc. In many Shiva temples, snakes are worshipped. Snakes easily move in and around the temples, take milk from devotees, nobody harms them and even they don't harm any one. In many ways, Hindu culture teaches humans to build a humane relation with animals and live together sharing the earth.

Ayurveda (the Veda for life) prescribes many herbal treatments for many diseases; this not only saves human being with natural medication, but also saves herbs and plants as useful friends of human being and facilitates respect to nature.

Also it offers many natural pest control measures which are popular and used in homes. For example, turmeric powder is used to get rid of red ants in the kitchen. Sarpagandha plant is planted near the courtyard to repel snakes etc. These prevent the use of chemical pesticides.

In rural areas of Orissa, farmers rarely kill rats; they just catch one rat, colour it hugely with sindoor (vermillion) and release it. Next day, rats stop visiting the place for at least three months. Biodiversity management groups may list out such practices and encourage replication of these 'good practices' to keep the food-chain intact and help preserve the bio-diversity.

To protect the environment, protection of trees is very necessary. Hindu culture gives special attention to this also. Banyan and bata trees are given the status of God and imagined as an abode of Lord Narayana. These trees cannot be cut or uprooted according to Hindu culture and plantation of these plants is considered as most pious work.

But unfortunately, after English subjugation of India since 1757 to 1947, a tendency of rejecting all the practices of Hindu culture as 'foolish thing' or 'blind faith' is embedded in the mind of people and this has taken much toll on relation between human and nature also.

Bio-diversity of India today, is almost destroyed. Sustainable education to people through generations on importance of bio-diversity and its impact on global warming is a Herculean task. Our culture could do it in a simple way—way of love, respect and mutual recognition!

Froma Kharadar to Khajji Ground: A report by BBC Urdu's Hasan Mujtaba

The Sindh Cabinet approved on Tuesday the Thar coal project for the generation of 600 to 1,000 megawatts (MW) of electricity under public-private partnership. A draft bill to ban the use of old syringes was approved as well, Sindh Information Minister Shazia Marri said while briefing journalists about the decisions taken by the Sindh Cabinet during its meeting on Tuesday.

The Cabinet also approved a draft bill to set up a medical university for women in district Benazirabad (formerly Nawabshah), a public-private partnership bill to launch the Keenjhar and Gorakh Hill projects and amendments in the Agriculture Act of 1939 to end the role of “middlemen”.

The Cabinet meeting, chaired by Sindh Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah decided to lease 610 forest acres in district Thatta and upgrade the taluka Shahdadpur hospital. It also decided to control price-hike during Ramazan.

The cabinet was briefed about the killing of Rehman Baloch (alias Rehman Dakait) in an alleged police encounter by Home Minister Dr Zulfiqar Mirza, as well as the public reaction to the killing.

Participants of the meeting hoped that Dakait’s death will help improve the law-and-order situation in the city, especially Lyari. The ministers condemned the Gojra incident in Punjab and observed a one-minute silence over the killings of Christians there.

Marri said that the Thar coal project was the joint Engro-Sindh government venture, under which 1.1 billion dollars will be spent for coal mining and 2.2 billion dollars for power generation.

She said that the feasibility report of the project will likely be completed within two years. In order to expedite the utilization of the coal reserves by providing infrastructure development, the construction of an airport was underway at Islamkot, while efforts were also being taken to lay railway lines there.

She said that the People’s Medical College in Benazirabad will be given the status of a medical university for women.

Sovling energy crisis

Khalid Chandio
Source
Energy provides personal comfort and mobility to people, and is essential for the generation of industrial, commercial and societal wealth. Energy is one of the important prerequisites for the economic development of any country. It has dual role i.e. it is used for the industrial and agricultural purposes and it is required for domestic use too. Pakistan is presently facing a serious energy crisis. Now, the demand exceeds supply and hence load shedding is being witnessed through frequent power shutdowns. She needs about 14000-15000MW electricity per day, and the demand is likely to rise to approximately 20,000 MW per day by 2010. Presently, it can produce about 11, 500 MW per day and thus there is a shortfall of about 3000-4000MW per day. This shortage is badly affecting industry, commerce and daily life of the people. The country needs a quantum jump in electricity generation in medium-term scenario to revert the possibilities of load shedding in future due to shrinking gap between demand and supply of electricity at peak hours.

Energy is a key factor for the stability and prosperity of Pakistan. If our production units keep on shutting down then unemployment will rise and hence street violence will get momentum. We have experienced a horrible power shut downs in Karachi, Lahore and other major cities of Pakistan where not only common people suffered but also our industries did suffer as most of the industries are based in major cities in Pakistan. Current economic scenario of Pakistan is already under intense pressure. On one hand it has the competitors like China and India giving cut throat fight and on the other hand it has continuous problem on its western borders draining its resources and causing political chaos. Serious energy shortage, massive load-shedding and lowest ever strategic oil reserves are emerging as major risk to the economy. One of the major problems facing the new government, the energy crisis, is intense, costly and multi-dimensional.

South Asia is important to world energy markets because it contains 1.3 billion people and is experiencing rapid energy demand growth. After India, Pakistan and Bangladesh are the next largest South Asian countries in these categories. Economic and population growth in South Asia have resulted in rapid increases in energy consumption in recent years.

The major energy issues facing South Asian nations today are keeping up with rapidly rising energy demand. It is also projected that by the year 2010 South Asian countries shall be consuming more than double the current levels of primary commercial energy. India is already in the race of acquiring energy from any part of the world and her thirst for energy culminated in singing of Indo-US Civilian Nuclear Technology. China’s energy-hungry economy has now focused on Africa; the world’s poorest continent emerging as an important global source of oil and gas attracting competing interest from Europe, Russia and Asia. China has also developed much warmer relations with Saudi Arabia. Now the question is why Pakistan is dormant and sitting idle in not having some sort of inter-regional and intra-regional arrangements for energy security.

It is a high time that Pakistan must restructure its energy policy. Instead of many agencies one central ministry ought to look after the energy issues in Pakistan. The dilemma is that over the years we have neglected other sources of energy i.e. coal, wind, solar etc. Take coal for example, Pakistan has the 7th largest coal reserve in the world (in Thar area- Sindh) but it is very unfortunate to know that it currently plays a minor role in Pakistan’s energy mix. Coal is one of the cheapest ways to produce electricity, and that is why countries like Australia produce 77% of their electricity from coal. Coal must be tapped as soon as possible.

The only argument for not going coal is put forward that it causes pollution but recently, thanks to technology, work is being done to make it as pollution free as possible. This project would not only help overcome un-employment but also bring prosperity and development in the area. And mind it that Thar is one of the poorest regions of Sindh. So, by initiating this project means development of Thar. The bureaucratic hurdles should be removed and the project must be started otherwise the future generation might not forgive us. The present government headed by Pakistan Peoples Party Parliamentarians (PPPP) both in Federal and Sindh has shown much interest in developing electricity through coal as it is the duty of the sitting government to ensure indiscriminate load shedding. Iran-Pakistan-India (IPI) gas pipeline should also get materialized as it not only guarantees energy but this project would also bring three countries much closer to each other. Because it is generally believed that trade brings prosperity and prosperity brings well being of the rank and file and these common people might become agents of change.

The other area that needs our attention is the wind energy and Pakistan is blessed with a large resource of wind corridor. So, the government should never hesitate by initiating this type of project. One area that needs our attention is to emphasize the conservation of energy. We have to persuade all the concerned that all possible measures be taken to save energy. Energy efficient plants and machines are the recipe for our survival. The campaign for initiating awareness by using efficient household appliances to mitigate energy crisis is needed. Because, energy conservation is indeed energy production.

Pakistan is facing acute shortage of energy and this would also be a wise decision to focus on nuclear energy which is renewable, cheap and environment free. The situation demands an urgent decision. A decision which is vital for the safety, stability and survival of Pakistan.

Threat of Talibanisation to the land of Sachal and Lal Shahbaz: Religious Fanatics Start Slaughtering Caretakers of Shrines in Sindh !

SANGHAR: Another shrine caretaker butchered

*Religious fanatics are behind slaughter campaign: Local people

SANGHAR, April 15: Caretaker of a shrine was slaughtered at the shrine near Jhol on Tuesday. Imdad Shah was asleep at the shrine of Miskeen Shah when unidentified people slaughtered him. They also severed his one hand. This is the fourth incident of its nature in the Sinjhoro area during last one year.

Earlier Neno Jatt was killed at the shrine of Juman Jali, Gul Khan at the shrine of Chhutto Pir and Malang at the shrine of Juman Shah near Sinjhoro. All of them were caretakers of the shrines and were slaughtered in the same manner. Sharp weapons were used in the murders. Nothing was looted from the shrine in any case.

The Sinjhoro police have failed to find any clue and the cases were pending in the police files. Even the motives behind the murders could not be ascertained.

Local people believe that religious fanatics, who do not like Sufi culture, are behind the murders.

Extremists disrupt dance programme

LARKANA, April 4: Unidentified men forced the cancellation of a spring fair near Larkana on Friday after they objected to the presence of dancing girls. According to organisers, the “hoodlums belonged to the Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam. However a JUI leader, Abdul Razzak Abid Lakho, disowned the assailants, saying that “we had merely requested the organisers to stop the dance. We have nothing to do with the disruption.” Sources in Waggan town said a group of JUI workers pulled up at the exhibition ground after Friday prayers and told the organisers to cancel the “vulgar dance” and expel the 12 dancers. “Otherwise you will be responsible for the consequences”. The men had brought with them a number of veils in order to shame the authorities. The terrorised dancers left the scene immediately and the organizers had no option but to cancel the programme.

Sindh Assembly unanimously adopts resolution supporting Zardari; condemns Sharif's conspiracy against democracy

SINDH ASSEMBLY SESSION: SA unanimously adopts resolution supporting Zardari

Staff Report

KARACHI: The Sindh Assembly (SA) unanimously condemned the forces that were trying to destabilise the democratically elected government and expressed full confidence in the leadership of President Asif Ali Zardari.

“This assembly not only strongly condemns the subversive, parochial, criminal and anti-national activities that are directed to destabilise the elected government by the anti-people forces but also reaffirms its support and repose full confidence in the leadership of President Asif Zardari,” read the resolution.

It added that god willing, Zardari, the proponent of “Pakistan Khappay” would rudder the ship through troubled waters to safe shores.

Sticking to their reconciliatory approach, all the parliamentary groups that attended the session unanimously voted for a resolution on Wednesday that expressed complete support to the president.

Muttahidda Quami Movement parliamentary group leader Sardar Ahmed, Pakistan People’s Party parliamentary group leader Pir Mazharul Haq, Awami National Party’s Amir Nawab, Pakistan Muslim League-Functional MPAs Marvi Rashidi and Nusrat Sehar Abbasi and National People’s Party’s Arif Mustafa Jatoi, moved the resolution.

Sindh Assembly Speaker Nisar Khuhro announced that the resolution was adopted unanimously.

The resolution recalled that the very assembly had unanimously voted for Zardari. It said that the global economic meltdown has badly affected the economy of Pakistan and the current elected government, under the able leadership of President Zardari, is making all efforts to fix the situation by controlling inflation, reducing unemployment, fighting the menace of terrorism and reinforcing peace and amity.

The resolution referred to the fact that the Zardari-led government brought all political parties including the dissidents onto one platform through intensive reconciliatory measures. It said that the forces were engaged in fanning hatred amongst the constituent units through propagation of parochialism and provincialism, particularly in Punjab, to serve their own nefarious designs. It added that these very inimical forces were trying to cause frustration and disenchantment amongst the people of Pakistan.

“The evil forces in their venom against the duly elected government indulged in vandalism and ransacked the memorial of Shaheed Benazir Bhutto who laid her life at the altar of democracy,” read the resolution.

Sindh Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah thanked MQM chief Altaf Hussain, PMLF chief Pir Pagaro, NPP’s Ghulam Mustafa Jatoi, PML’s Arbab Ghulam Rahim and ANP’s Asfandyar Wali for their support to the PPP-led government and the president, the said resolution stated.

The resolution did not identify any person or party by name but those who addressed the SA session, lashed out at Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) and its chief Nawaz Sharif for conspiring against the government.

Leader of the House Qaim Ali Shah reminded the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) chief Nawaz Sharif that he has violated the agreements and accords from day one.

Addressing the first day proceedings of the SA session on Wednesday, Shah said, “Nawaz Sharif signed the Charter of Democracy when PML-N was a PPP ally in the Alliance for Restoration of Democracy (ARD). However, he subsequently ditched the ARD and formed the All Parties Democratic Movement (APDM).”

The first day of the session was a show of PML-N opposition and with the unity shown by all parliamentary parties, a clear message was sent out to Sharif that Sindh unanimously dislikes PML-N’s politics of confrontation.

Members of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), Pakistan Muslim League-Functional (PML-F), National People’s Party (NPP) and Awami National Party spoke in favour of President Asif Ali Zardari and lashed out against what they referred to as conspiracies against democracy.

Shah said that Sharif had betrayed the APDM by announcing that the PML-N would contest the elections. “The Murree declaration was for the restoration of judiciary and Zardari has restored judiciary. 54 of the 60 judges have taken oath under the constitution, while others did not want to take oath under the constitution,” he said. He cited that the constitution did not allow anyone, including the prime minister, to reinstate the judges through an executive order. Shah also rejected the claim that the judges who ordered the disqualification of the Sharif’s were friends of Zardari. “Justice Moosa Leghari and Justice Zawar Hussain had disqualified Benazir Bhutto in the past. How can they be named as friends of Zardari?” questioned Shah. He added that the PPP leadership had accepted the judgments of the courts and the judges who gave verdicts against the PPP and they had been allowed to work as usual. “It was Sharif who ordered an attack on the Supreme Court. Independence of judiciary does not mean reinstatement of Chaudhry Iftikhar,” he added.

Shah further said that the governor rule in Punjab was in accordance with the constitution. Slamming Sharif and PML-N, he said, “The PML-N led government imposed governor rule in Sindh in 1998, although, the then SA had earlier unanimously adopted a resolution against the imposition of such a rule.”

Shah said that Shairf had violated the constitution time and again and disrespected the resolution of SA, while also installing an un-elected chief adviser and ministers after the dismissal of PML-N’s provincial government. Shah said that, even now, Nawaz is not respecting the majority in the Parliament. “During the tenure of Shahbaz Sharif as Punjab chief minister, bombs had also exploded but still they challenge the law and order situation. This is not a judicious decision on their part. It is inappropriate to use impolite and non-parliamentary language against the elected parties and leaders,” asserted Shah.

MQM’s parliamentary group’s Sardar Ahmed said that anti-people forces were trying to impede the democratic process through instability, chaos and confrontation. “Pakistan faces internal and external threats and there are enemies inside the country as well as on the other side of the border. Problems can be sorted out through negotiations and mediations but, unfortunately, some elements are unwilling to sort out the differences,” he said.

Awami National Party’s Amir Nawab said that confrontation was harmful for democracy and the economy. He said that the lawyers’ movement has been going on for the past two years but is still to bear fruit. “Credit goes to Zardari for an epoch-making national reconciliation in Pakistan but it is unfortunate that the forces whose interest is linked to dictatorship have become active soon after the restoration of democracy,” he said.

PML-F’s Marvi Rashdi and Nusrat Sehar Abbasi said that it was Zardari’s ‘Pakistan Khappay’ slogan that saved the country, otherwise, conditions would have been disastrous. They said that Pir Pagaro also backed PPP and Zardari in the larger interest of Pakistan.

National People’s Party’s Masroor Khan Jatoi said, “Critical circumstances needed a united course of action and we all have to join hands and counter the conspiracies and defeat the economic crisis and terrorism.” MQM’s Rauf Siddiqui reminded the PML-N chief, “Rebellion is a romantic word but in reality, rebels do not flee to Jeddah through a covert deal.”

On the occasion, MQM’s Faisal Subzwari, PPP’s Pir Mazharul Haq, Manzoor Wassan and Shehla Reza also addressed the assembly.
