MARDAN: Captain (R) Mohammad Safdar, member of the National Assembly and son-in-law of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, Thursday asked President Asif Ali Zardari to quit as he, according to the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader, failed to honour the commitments made with the nation.

Safdar was in Mardan to attend a meeting of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N)wherein Farooq Khan Hoti, son of Federal Minister Khwaja Muhammad Khan Hoti belonging to the Awami National Party announced to join Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz.

Addressing a meeting of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz workers at Hoti here, the son-in-law of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz Supreme Leader Nawaz Sharif said President Asif Ali Zardari should step down, as he could not live up to the expectations of the people and failed to fulfil the commitments made with the masses during the electioneering. Farooq Khan Hoti, son of Federal Minister and ANP leader Khwaja Muhammad Khan Hoti, announced joining PML-N at the meeting.

The elder Hoti has been criticised by the Mardan chapter of the Awami National Party for being disloyal to the party. The Mardan unit of the Awami National Party also requested the party’s central president, Asfandyar Wali Khan, to take action against Khwaja Mohammad Khan Hoti.

Captain (R) Safdar accused the Pakistan People’s Party government of taking dictation from abroad and said the rulers had no policy of their own to run the affairs of the country. He said that the government’s dependence on foreign advices has put the country into turmoil and situation has gone from bad to worse after the taking over of the present government.

The PML-N legislator said the country was in grip of the militancy, which is rising with every passing day but the government has no strategy to fight it. He went on to pledge that if the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz were voted to power, it would take no such dictation from abroad and put in place an indigenous strategy to resolve the problem of terrorism and militancy through broad-based dialogue with the stakeholders.

The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz leader also disclosed that twice-elected former prime minister Nawaz Sharif would lead a long march of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz on March 9 as a sign of unanimity and solidarity with the legal fraternity of the country struggling for restoration of the deposed chief justice, Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry.

Captain (R) Safdar claimed that millions of people from across the country would join the long march. He hoped that the march would prove a last nail in the coffin of the sitting government. PML-N leaders including Iqbal Zafar Jhagra, Pir Sabir Shah and Saranjam Khan also spoke on the occasion.

"Captain Safdar forgot to blame Zardari for running the PPP as a family show, just like Mian Nawaz Sharif who distributes MNA and MPA seats to his brother, nephew, son-in-law and other relatives."
