D. I. KHAN: A powerful suicide blast ripped through the crowded emergency ward of district Headquarters Hospital here Tuesday, killing at least 30 people and wounding many others.

IGP NWFP Malik Naveed told reporters that the blast took place when activists of a religious sect (Shia) and relatives of victim, Basit Shah who was shot dead by unknown gunmen near Faqiri gate here, were gathered at gate of emergency ward of the hospital to protest the cold blooded murder.

DSP Malik Mustaq is among the four other policemen who sustained critical injuries. There are reports that at least five policemen were killed in the incident.

Emergency was declared in hospitals while doctors were called in on duty. Police has cordoned off entire area and nobody was allowed to enter hospital premises. Meanwhile, local Taliban have claimed responsibility of the suicide attack, its spokesman, Maulvi Umer said that such suicide attacks by Taliban would continue till the operation in Swat and other NWFP areas was stopped.

Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani, Minister for Information and Broadcasting Sherry Rehman, Speaker National Assembly Dr. Fehmida Mirza and Deputy Speaker Faisal Karim Kundi have strongly condemned the suicide blast in Dera Ismail Khan that claimed several innocent lives.
