ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: American missile strikes and Pakistani military raids have reduced Al Qaeda's global reach but heightened the threat to Pakistan as the group disperses it cells here and fights to maintain its sanctuaries, Pakistani intelligence officials said.

The officials acknowledge that the strikes and raids are proving effective, killing as many as 80 Qaeda fighters in the past year. But they express growing alarm that the drone strikes in particular are having an increasingly destabilizing effect on their country.

They also voiced fears that the expected arrival of 17,000 American troops in Afghanistan this spring and summer will add to the stresses by pushing more Taliban fighters into Pakistan.

The assessment was provided during a two-hour briefing by senior analysts and officials of Pakistan's main spy service, the Inter-Services Intelligence, or ISI, who spoke on the condition of anonymity in keeping with the agency's policy.

The analysis reflected the increasing public pressure on the Pakistani government to oppose the drone attacks, which are deeply unpopular here for the civilian casualties they have inflicted.

But it also underscored ominous signs of Al Qaeda's resilience and pointed to new and unintended dangers for American policy in the region — a rapidly destabilized, nuclear-armed Pakistan, a state with a weak civilian government and a military struggling to fight an expanding insurgency.

The sobering Pakistani assessment was in contrast to the optimism voiced earlier this month by the new American director of national intelligence, Dennis Blair.

While the Pakistani analysis agreed with Blair's conclusion that Al Qaeda's ability to conduct large-scale attacks against the United States was likely degraded, it also signaled no cessation to the attacks by Al Qaeda and the Pakistani Taliban aimed at undermining Pakistan's government.

The Pakistani officials suggested that Al Qaeda was replenishing killed fighters and midlevel leaders with less experienced but more hard-core militants, who are considered more dangerous because they have fewer allegiances to local Pakistani tribes.

Qaeda leaders have also increased their financing and logistical support for the Taliban and other militant groups, having come to see the survival of Qaeda sanctuaries as dependent on the ability of the Taliban in Afghanistan and Pakistan to hold territory.

"It's morphing into a monster and growing uglier," said one senior Pakistani intelligence official.

The chief of the Pakistani Army, General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani, has indicated that the impact on Pakistan of more American troops in Afghanistan will be among the most important topics at his meetings in Washington this week, Pakistani officials say.

Pakistani intelligence and military officials say there is no argument that Qaeda fighters must be hunted down; they provide targeting information to the CIA, which remotely pilots the drones. But they complain that the missile strikes cause too many civilian casualties and that they hand the militants a propaganda windfall.

Pakistan says it has captured some 630 Qaeda fighters and senior leaders since 2001. But the assessment underscored the difficulties still faced by the Pakistan's security forces; in that time, more than 1,500 of its troops were killed and more than 3,700 were wounded.

The Pakistani intelligence assessment found that Al Qaeda had adapted to the blows to its command structure by shifting "to conduct decentralized operations under small but well organized regional groups" within Pakistan and Afghanistan.

American counterterrorism officials have long complained that Pakistan protects some militant groups like the Taliban as a proxy force, a charge that Pakistani officials say is no longer true.

American officials say the longstanding ties are coming back to haunt Pakistan.

"In Pakistan, the jihadist Frankenstein monster that was created by the Pakistani Army and the Pakistani intelligence service is now increasingly turning on its creators," Bruce Riedel, a former CIA analyst said in an interview on the Council on Foreign Relations' Web site on Jan. 28, two weeks before he was named a chairman of President Barack Obama's strategic review of Afghanistan and Pakistan.

There are other signs that Al Qaeda is under stress but adapting. Al Qaeda has given up training sites and shifted to mobile training teams, which Pakistani intelligence officials say are still effective.

They often consist of just a few bombmaking or tactical experts schooling a handful of fighters in a private house, according to a mid-level ISI agent who works in the tribal belt.

The flow of new recruits comes largely from countries like Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Somalia and Uzbekistan, Pakistani intelligence officials said. They often travel through Iran, enter Pakistan through Baluchistan Province and then move onto Waziristan for training, the agent said.

The impact of the new Qaeda emphasis on operations inside Pakistan was on full view in Swat, an area about 100 miles north of the capital, Islamabad, where the Pakistani Army agreed to a truce last week with the Pakistani Taliban, who control 70 percent of the territory, the agent said.

Uzbeks affiliated with Al Qaeda carried out the brunt of the militants' operations against civilians and the army in Swat, the agent and Pakistani military analysts said. The Uzbeks, who were driven across the border from Afghanistan with the Taliban and Qaeda after 2001, have been particularly ruthless as they helped their allies secure sanctuary in the tribal areas.

They have now been unleashed on Pakistani soldiers in Swat, the agent said.

In addition, Maulana Fazlullah, the leader of the Taliban in Swat, was backed by about a half dozen Arab fighters from Al Qaeda who served as the "main motivators," the agent said.

The Arabs who traveled from the Qaeda bases in Waziristan across the tribal belt to Swat are held in high esteem by Pakistani Taliban fighters, the agent said. "The Arabs motivate the local guys who see them as people who have forsaken all their money for jihad," the agent said.

The missile attacks by the American drones that have killed senior Qaeda figures had disrupted the lives of militants in North and South Waziristan, according to a fighter who goes by the name of Abdullah and who was interviewed in Peshawar, the capital of the North-West Frontier Province.

"We now often sleep in the river beds or under the eucalyptus trees," he said, adding that people were constantly on alert for the sound of the aircraft.

There was little doubt that the killing of Usama al-Kini, a Qaeda operative who was the senior commander for operations inside Pakistan, represented a setback to morale and operations, the fighter said. "He was very popular and very sociable with the ordinary people," the fighter said.

Al-Kini, a Kenyan, was killed in January near Wana, the capital of South Waziristan. He was described by Pakistani law enforcement officials as the mastermind of the terror attack against the Marriott Hotel in Islamabad last year.

But the Arab leaders of Al Qaeda were intent on promoting their fighters up through the ranks to overcome the loss of leaders like Al-Kini, the fighter said.

"The Arabs have a strategy to elevate people to a higher position," he said. "If someone is killed there is always a replacement. The training goes on."

The so called dictatorship watch is run by two shoddy characters: the front man is a yellow journalist, a sympathizer and promoter of the Taliban and Al Qaeda; his name is Abidullah Jan. the other man (most probably a nickname of Abidullah Jan) calls himself as "International Professor" or "Earthman".

Both of them (or one with both names?) are involved in spreading hate speech based on ethnic, religious and sectarian hatred, against Jews, Christians, Hindus, Barelvis, Shias, Qadianis etc.

According to some analysts, the site is used by rogue elements in Pakistan's ISI to promote pro-Taliban, pro-radical Islam and pro-Wahhabi propaganda.

This website, its administrators and those linked with this website and these two persons must be continuously monitored.

It is quite possible that some of them might be involved in potentially heinous acts of terrorism in South Asia and also in North America and Europe.

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) issued directives in the last week of December to Internet Service Providers (ISPs), ordering them to block a list of six webpages on the grounds that they were “harmful for the integrity of the country.”

The directive came on the orders of the Inter-Ministerial Committee (IMC) for the Evaluation of Websites. The IMC constitutes representatives of the Ministry of IT, PTA, Ministry of Interior and Cabinet Division. Its charter is to monitor and block blasphemous, pornographic, and anti-state or anti-Pakistan sites.

Three of the six webpages on the list issued by the PTA, however, are from dictatorshipwatch.com, a website set up after November 3, 2007..... Most of the blocked webpages contained articles which claimed to provide information about Punjab Governor Salman Taseer’s “history”; others had pictures of members of Taseer’s family at lavish parties thrown recently at the Punjab Governor House...

I meant to post this article last week, but the blog was already getting too weighted down. This 27 July "article" is by Abid Ullah Jan, a.... hack who basically writes paint-by-numbers paranoia screeds, anti-American hate, the inevitable triumph of Islam over the West and that sort of thing.

See this page for a list of informative articles such as "Arab Holocaust in the Making". He is essentialy an apologist for Islamofascism as well as for Saddam Hussein's regime, and saw the Taliban regime as "five years of relative peace and stability." He is part of the loathsome, US-based Media Monitors organization, which is a propaganda front for distributing Islamist apology. (He's apparently seeking political asylum in Canda too.)

I wanted to direct people to this article, "Fascism goes mainstream", in particular because it shows both the intellectual bankruptcy of many educated Arab commentators, as well as some interesting and distortive tactics where he tries to adopt many Western arguments against islamofascism and redirect them. Also see his equally strange follow up piece. Most of his writing, as far as I can tell, inevitably relies on either changing the subject and the tu quoque fallacy. This bit here is Jan at his most subtle:

The BNP (which few have ever heard of yet obviously represents Western societies in general) is Britain's most marginal and despised fringe party. It has managed to win a couple of local council seats in the past couple of years, but little else. The idea of BNP goons reading Bernard Lewis and Thomas Friedman is actually quite funny. Thus, there is but one example of Jan's self-serving hyperbole. In light of such propaganda, there is a column by Sheikh Abd Al-Hamid Al-Ansari criticizing Arab conspiracy theories about 9/11 that attempted to blame the Mossad, the US, the Michigan Militia, the Serbs, the . . . well, anyone but Osama bin Laden:

A different perspective (by Abid Ullah Jan) on the Hamid Mir report that I might consider abit more seriously:

Here is an interesting report by one of Pakistan’s prominent journalist from the tribal areas. The journalist is Hamid Mir. The man who played his role in facilitating the US war of aggression on Afghanistan by lying through one of his reports that Osama had told him AFTER 9/11 that he had nuclear weapons and will use them against the US forces. He also lied that Osama abducted him and tried to force him into writing his biography.

Anyway, now he reports from the Tribal areas, at least, after four years of war of terrorism by the US and Pakistani forces. He reports that both the US and Pakistani forces have not killed even a single Taliban or al-Qaeda member. The question is, where was he sleeping for the past four years? If he could see the truth after four years, where are the rest of the army of journalists who cannot move their bottoms from chairs in their comfortable office. This much report from him is neither news, nor a surprise. If you read reports on this and other sites, you would find the same contention that there are no Taliban as such and the war is simply a genocide of the innocent, helpless people.

Where report of this dubious personality starts facilitating a full scale war on Pakistan is where he starts consolidating lies of the warlords in the US - that al-Qaeda is there. That Pakistani forces are scared of them. That the army deliberately doesn’t attack them. That the army is only interested in dollars from US not the war on al-Qaeda. That his heart cries to see that Pakistan has lost the tribal areas. With journalists like these, who needs Thomas Friedman and company.

The Khilafah (Fatimi) of Egypt invited the crusaders for protection. The plot failed thanks the great Salahuddin otherwise the Crusaders would have been the “protectors” of the Khilafah.

If not Ataturk had fought the West then Turkey would have been biting the dust thanks to the Khalifah. I am not a fan of Ataturk, but there is no doubt that he saved Turkey with immense sacrifices. They didn’t like our “bahadur protectors” in Bangladesh.

We have only had four righteous Khalifahs - all the other with the exception of yet another Umar has had nothing to do with Khilafat. They have rather been kings of their ages. Apart from that we should not focus on words. What is important is we have governments which work for the prosperity to people, humanity and actions according to Qur’anic teachings.

POSTCARD USA: All that floats on the Internet — Khalid Hasan

There are countless nuts on the loose on the Internet and the best way of keeping one’s sanity intact is to delete unread any messages they send

There is far less political commotion in Pakistan than there is on the Internet, and it makes you wonder. Have some people nothing better to do than to unload their thoughts on whatever is going on or not going on in Pakistan?

Rarely if ever are these postings funny. When they try to be funny, they are droll, often spiteful and generally in poor taste. Of late, a new parody of the national anthem has been in circulation, which I refuse to read beyond the first two lines because they are unmetred or “vazan se bahar”. Our national anthem, although it contains no more than three or four words of Urdu, is at least metred.

There are some really weird characters out there. One who is probably based somewhere around Boston calls himself “International Professor” and Earthman alternatively. He is a vicious person who is forever spewing anti-liberal, anti-America, pro-Al Qaeda passion. He is also fond of attacking mainstream politicians and journalists, often brutally because many of his writings are an incitement to violence against the people he targets, a crime in America that Homeland Security might care to investigate. Some of those he targets have asked him to reveal his identity if he wants his outpourings to have any credibility. But he is a coward. Whoever he is, he is a dangerous man who is nastier than poison ivy.

The Internet is home to all kinds of scams and rip-offs and millions fall victim to them because of greed or curiosity or both. The FBI has a section that monitors the Internet to warn people of the dangers that lurk there.

This week, the FBI said that its Internet Crime Complaint Centre, called IC3, has been receiving thousands of reports concerning the “hit man” e-mail scam. Dating back to late 2006, the messages claim that the sender has been hired to kill the recipient. Two new versions of the scheme began appearing in July 2008. One instructed the recipient to contact a telephone number contained in the e-mail and the other claimed the recipient or a “loved one” was going to be kidnapped unless a ransom was paid.

Recipients of the kidnapping threat were told to respond via e-mail within 48 hours. The sender was to provide the location of the wire transfer five minutes before the deadline and was threatened with bodily harm if the ransom was not received within 30 minutes of the time frame given. The recipients’ personally identifiable information was included in the e-mail to promote the appearance that the sender actually knew the recipient and their location.

The FBI advised email users not to get “knocked off” by these cyber criminals who would try everything they can to access the recipient’s money and personal information. Advising those who receive “hit man” mails to inform the FBI, the bureau advised Internet users not to respond to unsolicited e-mail or spam, to be sceptical of individuals representing themselves as officials soliciting personal information via e-mail, not to click on links contained within an unsolicited e-mail, and to remain cautious of e-mails claiming to contain pictures in attached files, as the files may contain viruses.

People should open attachments from known senders only and validate the legitimacy of the organisation by directly accessing the organisation’s website rather than following the given link to the site. And under no circumstances should they provide personal or financial information to anyone who asks for it.

However, since a sucker is born every minute, according to Mark Twain, such good advice is fated to be lost on the greedy, the curious and the chicken-hearted.

Last week attention of peoples was invited regarding yellow journalists and corrupt media owners: Zardari has closed mouth of media with pearls – Now corrupt media is mouth piece only.

After publishing of above article “Lifafa journalists” and “sectarian gangs” attacked, as expected, with their filthy language through various e-mails. Nawai e Waqt was leading among those who were bashing the above report. Due to publicity of the said report, dozens of renowned persons contacted and asked for backup material. Most issues touched in the above report are crystal clear and all related facts are on public record. There is no need to further clarify what is before our eyes. However, some further explanation is due and given below.

To clarify some misunderstanding, it is necessary to point out that International Professor is not Abid Ullah Jan. International Professor is a sane, learned, honest and concerned Pakistani. The reason for his preference to write with a pseudo name is evident from the demands to persecute him as regurgitated in the daily Naw-i-waqt's note on the international professor's work.

This also shows how difficult it is to tell the truth in Pakistani press and media. You either have to toe the line or face the fate of Hayatullah Khan. There are quite a few journalists who dare to point out facts and criticise constructively along with partially submitting to the will of the mafia controlling all the strings. However, those kinds of reports and analysis do not make even a slightest dent in the tyrannical grip of the military and civilian feudal lords on the power structure in Pakistan, let alone making a meaningful impact and leading the way out.

That's why we need persons like International Professor who dare tell as it is, irrespective of any hope for rewards or fear of sustaining their jobs. If there is some element of yellow journalism in it, we better check our ear before running after a dog, thinking that the dog has taken our ear away.

Moreover continuous flow of funds from the sitting regime through various agencies flows in the form of bribe to gag the press and media.

It is not a surprise that BBC’s Mariana Babar was brave enough to visit the entire war zone in Paksitan, suffering under the tyranny of Paksitan's mercenary and fascist army.

Mariana's report was relayed throughout the world. Indian channels are continuously showing footage of Pak army invasion of parts of its own country. Foreign media is showing one million refugees dying of starvation. They are crossing into Afghanistan for refuge. But Pakistani media is silent about all this - as if nothing is happening other than what ISPR tells it to report.

Where is the Pakistani regime and private media, those are there to negotiate ads of millions of dollars to fill their stomach just don't want to see or show the facts. Talk shows are good enough, but where are reports from the ground? Where are interveiws with the victims of the regime's aggression.

It does not mean that there no honest person is in the media in Pakistan. Certainly there are a lot of honest journalists but none of those have enough power to raise finger against policies of rich media owners.

Question is whether media was running those ads free of cost, half page, full page and 3-5 minutes videos is an example, otherwise Ministry of information and Ministry of Finance has accounts of billions which media’s are receiving. Extra free lamb roasts, air tickets, hotel stay and gifts has a long list. I repeat everyone in media is not same, majority of media groups are running with the help of honest journalists.

It is the second time he is trying to use precious space of Nawai e Waqt to spread hate. However, he also advertised email of Salman Rashid Mirasi of Daily Times, which means that Nawai e Waqt resources have been used in this campaign.

The main cause of Aftab's anger is based on his involvement with Begum Shafiqa Zia ul Haq in narcotics smuggling case in a column, which later proved to be fabricated; I pointed out his mistake and asked for apology (it was duty of Ijaz ul Haq, not mine, neither am I a supporter).

His column published two days back was based on personal hate. It looked awkward to reply to him in the same tone. However people know him since long that how his father Zaffar Iqbal first time entered Lahore from Okara. His his shoes were in his arms at that time. And when Khalid Iqbal was studying at Lahore, his senior women class mates use to treat him as “Bhai” due to his woenish nature.

I think It is sufficient for him to understand otherwise his storey of joining Nawai e Waqt and many hidden stories could also be sent on the web, including his qualifications.

This is the reason that yellow journalists hate internet which has broken down their monopoly. It is well known that he is double crossing Nawai e Waqt group and its policies and working as a mole of Salman Taseer Singh media. I have no sound grounds to be involved in his character assassination because neither he belongs to liberal fascists nor is he an employee of any fascist media.

Zardari has closed mouth of media with pearls – Now corrupt media is mouth piece only

Dawn group:

Dawn group is completely sold, now it must remove image of Quaid e Azam from of the front page and may put picture of Zardari instead. Two brothers of DG ISI are running Dawn group, complete sectarian and polluted doctrines of ISPR are widely visible, influence of Sheher Bano alias Sherry Rahman who had been working with this group is another example of pressure on Dawn group, It is completely in grip of gay and lesbian liberals, almost all reports, columnists and sectarian agenda is given by Zardari. After appointment of Abdullah Hussain Haroon at UN, a continuity of same sect monopoly is also visible. Large amount of funds are flowing towards Dawn group from different sources including ISI, ISPR, PID and other sources. Its renowned columnist Cowsji when pointed out case of “Goad” written by Zardari at Mazar e Quaid was not presented in proper report and Dawn group tried to cover the story, neither Dawn TV reported on the issue. Israeli and Indian agents are widely visible on this channel including Irfan Hussain and Subaidar Major (retired) Kamran Shaffi, and with complete grip of Ispahani’s and Agha Khani’s on the paper.

ARY:

ARY is also completely sold, owners of group have deep links with Zardari in corruption cases, and ARY case is its example in money laundering of Zardari. Since long its three top anchors P J Mir, Javed Malik and Mazhar Abbas are already sold and receiving perks from PPP, another anchor Asma Shirazee could be seen with liberal fascist and brother of DG ISPR, it is working on slips of ISPR and PID, moreover it is against sovereignty of Pakistan by joining Indians and providing them access to strategic information. However it is not in the complete grip of liberal fascists as GEO and AAj are.

Have you seen an ad on GEO TV which starts with screaming voice of woman copied from rape scene of any movie? Then a voice starts commentary to bash Islam, soon after that crusaders notorious propaganda and naming terrorists as Islamic terrorist. Whether you think that Mir Shakil ur Rahman is liberal fascist or Jang Group is pro neo-Cons? Both speculations are not correct. There is no doubt that Journalists are filling their pockets and mouth of media owners has filled with pearls, so corrupt Pakistani media is a stigma on the name of journalism. Peoples named them as “his master’s voice” or “mouth piece of corrupt rulers”.

It is wondered that not a single leading channel or paper wrote anything about destruction of Kalabagh Dam by PPP. Where load shedding and lack of power supply has made crazy to citizens.

Responsibilities of media during civil war:

If Pakistani media will not fulfill its obligation to bring truth in public, if it will not raise finger against looters, plunderers and murderers then fate of Pakistan will not different from Iraq, Lebanon or Afghanistan. Stop taking advice of ministry of information or DG ISPR, if there is no way out then at least present both sides of the story. For example in each American aggression in Tribal areas, reports indicate that foreigners are killed, next day it proved to be incorrect, why Pakistani media is not honoring its responsibilities. There is no doubt peoples track and trace truth but it does not mean that media owners are running for for govt. ads to suck people’s money only. It is very well clear that pearls have closed mouths of media and made them mouth peace or his masters voice. There are a few honest journalists who are working on true principals otherwise it was sufficient to trust BBC reports rather local media. Don’t forget tyranny of PPP era’s when Bhutto directly threatened Mir Khalil ur Rahman, and on the issue of “Urdu Vs Sindhi” and “Bangla Desh na manzoor” all newspapers were put under censorship, now media is under threat of corrupt Sherry Rahman, her fourth legal husband is in hospital, otherwise stories of her liberalism are well known. In this flowing Ganga all channels and media groups are directly or indirectly involve in sucking people’s money, role of secret lifafa’s is a separate issue and a kind of corruption and dishonesty.

Taliban's FM Radio "Intolerance 101" - By Tariq Aqil

The month of September witnessed the brutal and senseless murder of three Ahmedis in Pakistan. This gruesome tragedy happened in the aftermath of a popular TV programme in which Ahmedis were blamed for everything under the sun. It appears as if some of our TV channels have been taken over by the dark and sinister forces of obscurantism. All non-Muslims and those who dare to stand up to the forces of religious fanaticism are declared infidels and worthy only of death.

Despite the carnage at the Marriott in Islamabad, and many other similar incidents before it, much of the educated elite of the country still believes in the fallacy that 'Muslims cannot do such a thing'. Regrettably, large sections of the media also refuse to accept this ground reality and mimic the same line. This is accompanied with America-bashing – virtually every suicide bombing, atrocity, every senseless killing is blamed on America, India, and the CIA. Another all-time whipping boy is the Jewish lobby or the 'Yahood-o- Nasara' meaning Jews and Christians. We seem to blame everyone including Charlie's aunt except our own homegrown obscurantist religious bigots. We are so blinded by our religious intolerance and hatred of Western nations that our vision is now limited to the tip of our nose. If we do not wake up from our deep slumber of ignorance the country is very likely to tear apart at the seams.

After the creation of Pakistan, religion became politicized. Most religious parties became political outfits that used the name of Islam and exploited religion for their own political objectives. Religious scholars, clerics, pirs, and sajjada nashins became politicians or stooges of politicians and the phenomenon of 'mullahism' was born. Illiterate, narrow-minded clerics became willing tools in the hands of greedy and corrupt politicians. The rise of the mullah, in Pakistan and in other parts of the world, is a direct cause of sectarianism and religious intolerance – creating sectarian schisms and conflict in not only Pakistan but India, Sudan, Egypt, Nigeria, Jordan and Iraq.

The Taliban in Pakistan are a recent phenomenon hell-bent on taking us back to the Dark Ages. They have complete disregard for human life, human rights or even human values. Dozens of girls' schools have been torched or dynamited in Swat and FATA, men have been forced to sport beards and music and CD shops have been bombed. Many schools in Islamabad have also received threats and warnings from these so called champions of Islam. Imagine the state of affairs in the country if these mindless religious fanatics take control of the state.

Many of our political leaders and intellectuals argue that terrorism in Pakistan is a direct result of Pakistan's support to the US in their war on terror after the happenings of 9/11. They fail to recognize the simple fact that the roots of terrorism lie deep within Pakistan and its chequered past. The terrorism we face today is a direct offshoot of sectarian violence and religious killings of the past. Who created the Sipah-e-Sahaba or the Jaish-e-Mohammad? These extremist militant groups were founded well before 9/11 or even before the birth of the Taliban in Afghanistan. And the fact also is that they were founded, nurtured and led by Pakistanis and not by the 'Yahood-o-Nasara'. Also, take a look at the case of Harakat-ul-Ansar or Harakat-ul-Mujahideen. Who founded, supported and financed these groups? Today we have Swat's Maulana Fazalullah spitting fire and brimstone from his electronic pulpit, an FM radio station, spreading hatred and venom across the beautiful valley. All these gentlemen are Pakistani Muslims up in arms against the state of Pakistan.

The founders and leaders of our home grown religious extremist groups did not spring up overnight. They were educated, nurtured, trained and finally launched by the numerous madressahs which have mushroomed all over the country. There is a clear co-relation between the rapid growth of madressahs and intolerance and extremism. Some of the madressahs which have been established by semi-literate mullahs are spreading intolerance and helping produce today's and tomorrow's suicide bombers. Such madressahs have played a pivotal role in creating the hardcore terrorists of today.

These madressahs function without any supervisory body and their syllabus is based on a doctrine of intolerance and rigid obscurantism. In their worldview women who do not wear a veil and men without beards are all kafirs. Listening to music or watching TV or movies is forbidden, and the only way to reform society and those who live in it are imposition of Sharia, by force if necessary. They also teach that suicide bombing is okay if done against infidels and that those who die as suicide bombers will find a place in Paradise. It is this teaching and preaching that has resulted in the dozens of suicide attacks that have taken place inside Pakistan and have killed women leaders such as Benazir Bhutto and provincial minister Zille Huma (killed by a self-professed fanatic in Gujranwala). The Lal Masjid fiasco is too recent to forget but let us not forget it was the maulanas of the mosque who motivated their students to occupy government property illegally, destroy video shops and kidnap citizens.

The Taliban have succeeded in creating an atmosphere of fear and horror. The Taliban philosophy has destroyed the ideals and beliefs of a free society. According to them, freedom of thought and expression is not needed at all and anybody who dares to disagree with them is butchered. The image of the country has suffered irreparable harm the name of our religion has been defamed by the acts of these barbarians. This scourge is not confined to the tribal areas only and is slowly but surely creeping towards the settled urban areas of the frontier, Punjab and Sindh. The choice before us is pretty simple: face this menace and defeat it or hand over the country to these obscurantist forces. (The News)
